Victoria, British Columbia to Host National Championship

CBC's Hockey Night in Canada Presents Play On! today announced Victoria, BC as the location for its National Championship event. Thirty teams will compete in this national 4on4 street hockey tournament on Belleville St in Victoria's inner harbour on January 29-30, 2010 for a chance to hoist the Redwood Cup. In the words of Roy MacGregor, "There is something pure and sweet about road hockey that is worth preserving for generations to come. The game has meant more to young Canadians than any other game in any form." Each of the thirty teams that will participate in this event previously qualified to do so during one of the twelve CBC's Hockey Night in Canada Presents Play On! events held across Canada this past summer. Winners of this national championship event will be awarded the Redwood Cup and be recognized as Canada's greatest street hockey players. National Champions will also take home a $10,000 cash prize.
CBC's Hockey Night in Canada Presents Play On! National Championship tournament will also be featured in conjunction with the tenth annual Tim Hortons Hockey Day in Canada celebration on January 30, 2010 at 12 noon ET on CBC TV. Victoria, BC will be one of the satellite locations that will be visited across Canada as part of Tim Hortons Hockey Day in Canada on CBC, with coverage from this national championship event.
The Hotel Grand Pacific will be the Official and Exclusive Hotel Partner of the event, which is also sponsored by The Hockey News and Tourism Victoria. "We are excited to work with Play On! and the City of Victoria to bring this event here. Even in late January, Victoria is a beautiful destination that we are thrilled to showcase to CBC's viewers across Canada," stated Rob Gialloreto, President & CEO, Tourism Victoria.
The twelve host cities of CBC Hockey Night in Canada Presents Play On! in the summer of 2009 were St. John's, Halifax, Moncton, Montreal, Ottawa, Oshawa, London, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver.

National Championship Game to begin Saturday January 30th at 5:00pm
Admission: This event is free to spectators. Seating available on a first come first serve basis.

CBC's Hockey Night in Canada Presents Play On! features recreational and competitive street hockey tournament divisions for both genders, all skill levels, and all ages. About the Redwood Cup
The Redwood Cup is awarded annually to the CBC's Hockey Night in Canada Presents Play On! national champions, who are recognized as Canada's greatest street hockey players. The Cup stands 49" (124.5cm) tall and is made of solid redwood with plated sterling silver. The five silver sticks that encompass and support the trophy are representative of the number of players on each original Play On! team. They also guard the silver plated maple leaf, symbolic of the importance of hockey to our nation. Heavier than the Stanley Cup, it weighs over 63 lbs (28.6 kg)! The Cup gets its name from Redwood Road in Kingsville, Ontario.
