CBC Hockey Night in Canada's Play On! today announced the 2010 schedule for the nation’s largest annual sports festival.
In the words of Roy MacGregor, "There is something pure and sweet about road hockey that is worth preserving for generations to come. The game has meant more to young Canadians than any other game in any form." With the first tournaments happening in Hamilton and Kelowna in May, and additional events across the country throughout the summer, each CBC Hockey Night in Canada's Play On! event features recreational and competitive street hockey tournament divisions for boys, girls, men and women of all ages and all skill levels.
CBC Hockey Night in Canada's Play On! events will be held over the full course of a weekend in St. John's, NL; Halifax, NS; Moncton, NB; Montreal, QC; Ottawa, ON; Oshawa, ON; Toronto, ON; Hamilton, ON; London, ON; Winnipeg, MB; Regina, SK; Saskatoon, SK; Calgary, AB; Edmonton, AB; Kelowna, BC; and Vancouver, BC (please see specific event dates below*), with the first event of the tour slated to kick off in Hamilton on May 15 & 16 on King Street West. Approximately 25 rinks will be operated at all times over a kilometre of street during the course of each event.
Winners and finalists in Elite Male and Female divisions from each summer event will progress to the 5th Annual National Championship to compete for the Redwood Cup and recognition as "Canada's Greatest Street Hockey Players". The National Championship event will once again be held as part of Tim Hortons Hockey Day in Canada on CBC next February.
CBC Hockey Night in Canada's Play On! is also proudly sponsored by Booster Juice, KFC, Powerade ION4, The Hockey News, and the NHLPA.
Canadians of all ages and skill levels are invited to visit www.playon.ca for more information, rules and regulations, and to register their teams. All captains that register teams in advance of March 25th will be automatically entered into a draw to receive free tickets to every game of the 2010 Memorial Cup in Brandon, Manitoba!
