This past weekend Play On! visited Burnaby for its second and final stop in British Columbia this summer and what a tournament to go out on! With 356 teams competing to be crowned the best in their division, the action on the streets and rooftop parking lot was the only thing hotter than the sun Saturday afternoon.
For those of you who made the trip into Metrotown to participate or watch the tournament it truly epitomized the festival atmosphere typical of any Play On! event. The event site was creative and made for a great weekend for all participants. It was exciting to watch the action atop of the rooftop parkade, with the odd ball taking a trip over the edge. Over on Central and Bronson, the competition was fierce and caught the eye of many Sky Train passengers who stopped on their way to take in some of the action. The event really brought the Burnaby community together in a true celebration of the game.
The elite competition was particularly fierce – in both the female and male divisions. The women’s elite final saw the BC Hawks versus The Wellwoods which provided an exciting finish. Leading 5-4 with less than a minute to play, the BC Hawks goalie made an incredible glove save on a Wellwoods shot from the slot preserving the slight lead. It was all for not though, as The Wellwoods tied up the game with 12 seconds left to force a shootout which they eventually took to complete the comeback.
Three time Vancouver and defending National Champions, the Vancouver Ball Hogz, were in tough in the second round of the playoffs where they would meet C.C.C.P., a team who became quite popular at the National Championship event earlier this year. The Ball Hogz would go on to win that game but were ousted in the next round. It was the first time when they were not victorious at a Play On! event.
In the elite final it was The Centurions and Eclipse (Twilight saga super fans who recently played under the moniker “Richmond New Moon”). Both teams also competed in this past year’s Elite National Championship. The game was action packed and tight right to the finish, where the eventual winners the Centurions held on for a 6-5 win.
The Centurions, Eclipse, The BC Hawks and The Wellwoods all qualify for the National Championships, which will once again be played in Victoria, British Columbia as part of Hockey Day in Canada on CBC in 2011.
Thank you to all those who came out this past weekend and until next year, Play On! Burnaby.
