Play On! made its lone stop in Oshawa, Ontario this past weekend, a rarity in a busy summer tour schedule that usually sees multiple events being played out each weekend across the country.
On Saturday the stage was set and the conditions were wet, as teams competed out front of the General Motors Centre in downtown Oshawa. Despite the rain the competition was fierce as teams were jockeying to obtain the best seeding position going into Sunday.
The highlight of the event occurred Sunday at noon – while this was not the first time a couple has gotten married as a result of meeting at a Play On! event -- it was the first time that a couple who met at a Play On! event decided to get married at the event! Organizers could not have been more thrilled for newlywed couple Greg and Laura Mason, who tied the knot after the CBC Hockey Night in Canada breakaway competition at the centre of Rink 1. We wish the two of them all the best in their future life endeavours.
The rain stayed away on Sunday but cloudy tempers still remained among some of the teams competing during playoff day. In the Enforcers (17&Under) division the home team and defending champion ‘Whitby Warriors’ (2010 Hamilton Finalist & 2010 Montreal Champion) were looking to capture their second championship of the summer. The Warriors matched up with the ‘Toronto Ticats’ in the semi final, an undisciplined team whose unsportsmanlike conduct ultimately cost them a trip to the division finals. Sure enough, the Whitby Warriors proceeded to capture the Enforcers division – our congratulations go out to them. But can they complete the triple header in what will certainly be a big event in Ottawa?
The Elite final once again pitted 2008 Oshawa Champions - The Scarborough Lemon Muffins against 2008 National Champions and 2009 Oshawa Champions - The Oshawa Bulls, in a rematch of last year’s Oshawa final. With bragging rights on the line it was anticipated that the final would be competitive and it was. The game was heated as both sides were on edge, there was an early scrum and both teams had to be separated and warned to just play the game. Cooler heads would not prevail in this one as the game reached its boiling point and it had to be called off by event organizers as a result of unsportsmanlike conduct from both sides. National program Director Scott Hill has indicated that he will be reviewing the situation prior to determining whether either team will be permitted to participate at the 2011 National Championship in Victoria, British Columbia as part of Hockey Day in Canada on CBC.
A special congratulation goes out to all of our division winners and a thank you to all participants and spectators who came out this past weekend in Oshawa.
Until next year, Play On! Oshawa.
