Calgary Celebrates Official “Play On! Weekend”

Monday, June 21, 2010

On the heels of Mayor Bronconnier declaring June 19-20 Calgary’s official “Play On! Weekend”, Play On! celebrated Father’s Day in style! Having endured a rainy week that had organizers worried, the clouds parted to give way to one of the brightest street hockey tournaments in the country. The sun was shining all weekend and the only thing hotter was the action on the asphalt!

385 teams gathered at Deerfoot Mall to take part in the second largest street hockey tournament ever. The competition was fierce as there were several formidable teams vying for the top spot in their division.

Particularly in the Elite division, there were many strong teams challenging to qualify for the National Championships. The Phantoms, who were one goal away from being the best team in the country earlier this year, were in tough to qualify for another shot at the National title. Seeded 10th after Saturday, they had a long road to the finals, but they did what they had to do to once again be the top team in the city. They defeated the Okotoks Bearcats who also had a very strong tournament. Both teams qualify for the National Championships to be held in Victoria next February.

Congratulations go out to all division winners and finalists. You put on quite a show!

Special thanks also goes out to the organizers, staff, officials and volunteers who made the event a truly memorable Father’s Day!

Great job to all and until the next official “Play On! Weekend”, keep your stick on the street Calgary!
