“Prairies” Are Answered as Play On! Visits Regina

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

Play On! ended its summer tour of events with its first tournament ever in Regina and second tournament in Saskatchewan in as many weeks. Many were on hand to witness and participate in a fun filled tournament for all involved.

As a first year host of Play On!, Regina demonstrated the ability to celebrate hockey in its purest form as well as any other city in the country. The action was very fun, friendly and skilled all weekend long and it was a great event to end the tour on.

Highlights of the weekend included a one-armed pushup showdown between two entertaining goalies, an exciting shootout competition graded on both goals scored and style points, and a tightly contested Elite final.

The last game of the tournament saw first time team Broken Arrows defeat the Saskatchewan Screech, who represented the province at last year’s National Championship. Despite their experience, however, the Screech were in tough as their goalie sustained an injury late in their semi-final win. Captain Justin D’Entremont donned the pads for the finals and made some wonderful saves in his Play On! goalie debut (including a huge slap shot to the mask).

Broken Arrows proved that they deserved the #1 seed after Saturday with some strong play of their own and beat the Screech 10-7. Congratulations to both teams for qualifying for the National Championships to be held in Victoria BC in February 2011 as part of CBC’s Hockey Day in Canada.

Special thanks to all volunteers and officials who did an outstanding job all weekend!

We look forward to returning to Regina in 2011. Until then, Play On! and have a great summer everyone!
