CBC Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! Capped off its 2010 Summer Season with a return to Ottawa, Ontario this past weekend. 215 teams flocked to Scotiabank Place to compete in the two day event.
On Friday night NHL fans watched anxiously as their teams selected their next superstar at the NHL Entry Draft. Back in Ottawa, Play On! teams were drafting up plays that would vault them into the top spot of their divisions.
The competition was heightened as teams made the trip from all over Ontario and Quebec to compete in the final weekend of competition. The passion for hockey was alive in Ottawa throughout the weekend. A huge thank you goes out to our volunteers and officials who put in countless hours of their time throughout the weekend.
In the Elite division there was a sense of urgency for many teams, as it was the last weekend to qualify for the 2011 National Championships and to say the competition was fierce would be an understatement. Skank Budda, the 2010 Play On! London Elite Champions, made the trip to Ottawa to see how they stacked up against the Eastern Ontario and Quebec teams, they played to an eventual quarter final loss. Defending Champions and last years’ National Championship Semi Finalists, the Ottawa 67’s held the top spot in the division after Saturday’s competition and were looking to repeat entering Sunday. With two mercies in their first two games, they met the S.W.A.T. Team in the Semi Finals. In a close game the S.W.A.T. Team defeated the Ottawa 67’s 9-7 and advanced to the Elite final.
In the Elite final it was S.W.A.T. Team versus the Trojans, two teams who made the trip over from Quebec to compete. The game was action packed and when the final whistle blew it still wasn’t enough. The teams played to a tie at the end of regulation forcing a shootout. The shootout featured many jaw dropping goals including a perfectly placed top corner laser of a shot by the S.W.A.T. Team which would be the eventual shootout winner to capture the Elite Championship. Both teams will now qualify for the National Championships to be played February 11-12, 2011 in Victoria, BC as part of CBC’s Hockey Day in Canada.
Special congratulations go out to all Division winners this past weekend.
Thank you Ottawa for making the final weekend of Play On! a special one and we look forward to returning to the Nation’s Capital in 2011.
Until next year, Play On! Ottawa.
