National Championships to be Featured during Tim Horton's Hockey Day in Canada on CBC
Wednesday, February 18, 2009
CBC's Hockey Night in Canada Presents Play On! today announced Windsor, ON as the location for its National Championship event. Sixteen teams will go head-to-head in the 4on4 street hockey tournament on Riverside Drive in Windsor on Feb. 20-21, 2009 for a chance to hoist the Redwood Cup. Full event details are listed below.
In the words of Roy MacGregor, "There is something pure and sweet about road hockey that is worth preserving for generations to come. The game has meant more to young Canadians than any other game in any form."
Each of the sixteen teams that will participate in this event previously qualified to do so during one of the eight CBC's Hockey Night in Canada Presents Play On! events held across Canada last summer. Winners of this national championship event will be awarded the Redwood Cup - which was recently featured in display at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto - and be recognized as Canada's greatest street hockey players.
CBC's Hockey Night in Canada Presents Play On! National Championship tournament will also be featured in conjunction with the ninth annual Tim Hortons Hockey Day in Canada celebration on February 21, 2009 at 12 noon ET on CBC TV. Windsor, ON will be one of the satellite locations that will be visited across Canada as part of Tim Hortons Hockey Day in Canada on CBC, with coverage from this national championship event.
The eight host cities of CBC's Hockey Night in Canada Presents Play On! in the summer of 2008 were Halifax, Ottawa, Oshawa, London, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, and Langley. Competing in this National Championship event will be teams from these cities, as well as from Windsor (ON), Niagara Falls (ON), Prince Albert (SK), Montreal (QC), Gatineau (QC), and Delhi (ON).
The National Championship event is also sponsored by The Hockey News, SANDE Hockey, Long & McQuade Musical Instruments, Discount Car & Truck Rental, Brian's Custom Goalie Equipment, Toshiba, the Westmont Hospitality Group, and Securitas.
