Yarmouth, Nova Scotia to Host National Championships

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! is excited to announce that the 2013 national street hockey championships will be held September 26-28, 2013 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The tenth anniversary season of the fastest growing sports festival in Canada will culminate with its largest ever national championship event.  One hundred and sixty-eight teams from across Canada will be invited to Yarmouth to compete for the Redwood Cup.

Each of these teams must earn their right to attend this championship by virtue of performance at one of the twenty-one qualifier events held across the country this May and June.  In all, over 6,000 teams are expected to compete for the Redwood Cup this season.  Teams will pay their own travel expenses to the event.

Seventeen cities across Canada expressed interest in hosting this season’s national championship. The event was awarded to the Yarmouth region since it presented the most comprehensive and compelling opportunity for this season’s championship.  “We’re absolutely thrilled to bring this tenth anniversary event to Nova Scotia,” stated Scott Hill, National Program Director.  “Canadians are going to be blown away with the unique experience and hospitality that the Yarmouth and Acadian Shores region offers.  It is also Eastern Canada’s turn to host this championship, and what better way to celebrate ten great years than to return the Province where the program was founded.”

"We're certainly excited to be hosting the Hockey Night in Canada's Play On! National Championships, especially in its tenth year!” stated Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood.  “There's nothing quite like the hospitality of Yarmouth and Acadian Shores, and we look forward to welcoming Canada to what we know will be a great experience for all."

There are some exciting new additions being planned for this season’s championships.  First, they will take place over a three day period, one more day than in past seasons.  Second, in addition to annual Men’s and Women’s championships, this season will include a 19&Under and 17&Under national championship.  Finally, each division champion will be awarded, and retain, a sterling silver replica Redwood Cup.  Men’s and Women’s winners will be recognized on CBC television as Canada’s greatest street hockey players.

The entire event will be held on the streets of Yarmouth and will be free to spectators.

Teams that qualify to compete at this event will include winners and finalists from each of the Men’s Elite, Women’s Elite, 19&Under (Male) and 17&Under (Male) divisions of the twenty-one host cities of Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! in 2013, including Winnipeg, Hamilton, Montreal, Kelowna, London, Edmonton, Moncton, Toronto, Charlottetown, Fort McMurray, Ottawa, Saskatoon, Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax, Victoria, Regina, St. John’s, Sudbury, and Kingston.  A full schedule of these events is available at http://www.playon.ca/events

The Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! program is sponsored by Booster Juice, Pro Hockey Life, Stub Hub!, UPS, KPMG, and Gongshow Gear.  Additional sponsorship opportunities associated with the national championship are now available.
