CrossIron Mills and Play On! Canada are delighted to announce that they will once again host the Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! event in Calgary June 10-11, 2017.
Play On! – sponsored by the CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada – has become recognized as a uniquely Canadian outdoor street hockey tournament & festival attracting hundreds of thousands of Canadians annually from coast to coast. The Calgary event is the longest running Play On! event in Alberta, since it was first held in downtown Calgary in 2004, one year before the program also began to operate in Edmonton.
The Calgary event has continued to grow annually ever since that first event. Increasing participant and space demands necessitated its relocation to CrossIron Mills in 2013, the same year Calgary’s Mayor first declared the second weekend of June to be “The Official Play On! Weekend” in Calgary. Since that time, nearly five hundred teams and over thirty-five hundred players from throughout the region - supported by many thousands of their friends and families - now plan their lives around this event in Calgary annually, enjoying the hospitality, restaurants, retail, and world class entertainment available in the mall between and around their games.
“We are excited to return to Calgary and especially to CrossIron Mills, a host venue that offers our fans a true destination experience,” said Scott Hill, Founder and Commissioner of the Play On! program. “Whether they are enjoying a meal at Fionn MacCools or a movie after their games, the Play On! experience at CrossIron Mills is truly one of the most indelible in the country.”
The Play On! 2017 event in Calgary will be held as part of Canada’s 150th anniversary celebration. The two-day competition is open to individuals of any age or skill level organized into self-selected teams consisting of as few as four or as many as nine players. There are divisions and categories for individuals/teams of any skill level, including for those who may be new to Canada and who have never played any form of hockey before. An inclusive event that uniquely combines Canadian sport and culture – it is interesting to note that more than 50% of participants in this event across Canada have historically not played ice hockey, including eight members of the Montreal Red Lite – the current men’s national street hockey champions. Anyone can go to www.playon.ca and create their own team to play in one of the fifty separate divisions for boys, girls, men and women. The event also includes a Corporate division, with proceeds donated to Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary. Championship t-shirts, medallions, and other prizes are awarded to all divisions winners.
Approximately 50 rinks will be constructed to accommodate the more than 1200 games that are expected to be contested during the weekend. More than 150 volunteers and over 100 referees will be organized to help deliver the event. Those who wish to participate as a volunteer or referee may apply now at www.playon.ca
The Play On! program is sponsored nationally by Booster Juice, CBC, Sportsnet, and JVCKenwood. More opportunities for corporations to tap into the power of Canada’s largest annual participatory sports event, through sponsorship, are also available for a limited time. Registration is now open at www.playon.ca and will continue until the event is full (please note that space is limited and that this event has historically sold out prior to the registration deadline).
About Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On!
Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! is Canada’s largest sports festival, featuring recreational and competitive street hockey tournament divisions for both genders, all skill levels, and all ages. Since the program's inception in 2003, more than two million Canadians have ‘taken back the streets’ from coast to coast through involvement in one of the one hundred and fifty-five (155) Play On! events held to date. The events have collectively included participation from many prominent Canadians and hundreds of professional hockey players, including current NHL players Connor McDavid, Nathan McKinnon and Aaron Ekblad. These large-scale, highly organized street hockey events celebrate the game of hockey in its purest form, in a wholesome, fun-filled atmosphere that makes kids feel like NHL pros and helps adults feel like kids again. All interested participants can visit www.playon.ca for tournament information, to register a team, and more.
