Approximately 4,000 players have competed annually in one of Ontario’s largest celebrations of sport and culture.
February 7, 2017 – The City of London and Play On! Canada are delighted to announce that they will once again host the Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! tournament festival on the streets surrounding Victoria Park, in downtown London, May 20-21, 2017.
Play On! – sponsored by the CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada – has become recognized as a uniquely Canadian outdoor hockey tournament & festival attracting hundreds of thousands of Canadians annually from coast to coast. Founded by a graduate of Western University’s Ivey MBA Program, Play On! London is in its 12th year at Victoria Park, and organizers are delighted to return once again to a premier tourist destination in Ontario.
“The London event is certainly special to me,” said Founder and Commissioner of the program, Scott Hill. “It is particularly rewarding to see more than 25,000 people from the community in which you reside embrace a project you love and to which you have dedicated much of your life.” Hill then continued, “However, the very best part is still just watching my kids playing in the event with their friends.”
More than five hundred teams and four thousand players from throughout Ontario, the United States, and Quebec - supported by many thousands of additional friends and families - now plan their May long weekend around this event in London annually, enjoying the hospitality, restaurants, retail, and world class entertainment available in downtown London between and around their games.
London Ontario Mayor Matt Brown said “I certainly am looking forward with great anticipation to many more years of Play On! in London, and to many thousands of participants enjoying this event that is just so well organized.”
The Play On! 2017 event in London will be held as part of Canada’s 150th anniversary celebration May 20-21. The two-day competition is open to individuals of any age or skill level organized into self-selected teams consisting of as few as four or as many as nine players. There are divisions and categories for individuals/teams of any skill level, including for those who may be new to Canada and who have never played any form of hockey before. An inclusive event that uniquely combines Canadian sport and culture - more than 50% of participants in this event across Canada have historically not played ice hockey, including eight members of the Montreal Red Lite – the current men’s national street hockey champions. Anyone can go to www.playon.ca and create your own team to play in one of the fifty separate boys, girls, men and womens divisions to choose from. The event also includes a Corporate division, with proceeds donated to the Boys & Girls Club of London. Championship t-shirts, medallions, and other prizes are awarded to all divisions winners.
The Play On! program is sponsored nationally by Booster Juice, CBC, Sportsnet, and Via Rail. The official national charitable partner of the program is the Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada. Local sponsors of the event include the London Free Press and The Station Park Hotel, which is the official hotel partner of the program in 2017. Additional local corporate sponsorship opportunities are available for a limited time. Registration is now open at www.playon.ca and will continue until the event is full (please note that space is limited and that this event has historically sold out prior to the registration deadline). The registration deadline for this event is May 15th, 2017 at midnight.
The event will also require approximately 150 volunteers. Anyone over 16 years of age with interest in major sports and community events can apply to be a volunteer for this event by registering at www.playon.ca. Further, the event requires 125 referees, who are compensated with $8 for each 30-minute game officiated, plus commemorative hats, t-shirts, water bottles, meals, and beverages. Referees are screened in advance and must also register at www.playon.ca
