President & CEO of Consumer Protection BC to advise on the future of Canada’s largest annual participatory sports event
October 6, 2017 – Play On! Canada is pleased to welcome Rob Gialloreto as a new member of its Advisory Board.
As the current President & CEO of Consumer Protection BC, Rob leads the organization responsible for protecting consumers and encouraging a fair marketplace in British Columbia. He also currently serves as the Vice Chair for the Real Estate Council of British Columbia.
Rob previously held the position of President and CEO at Tourism Victoria, where (as the host of three consecutive Redwood Cup National Street Hockey Championships) he first became familiar with the Play On! program. His extensive experience includes serving as the CEO at Travel Alberta, and as a Senior Manager at the City of Calgary, where he sat on Tourism Calgary’s Board of Directors. Rob holds a Master’s degree in business from Springfield College and an undergraduate degree in education from McGill University. He was honoured to be recognized as one of the Top 25 Extraordinary Minds in Sales and Marketing from the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International in 2009, and was an inaugural recipient of the Diamond Jubilee Medal, which honours significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. His resume includes 10 years of experience in Professional Sports, beginning many years ago as an intern with the Hartford Whalers.
“I've loved this program from the beginning and have watched it grow and develop,” said Gialloreto. “It carries with it so many important things to Canadians such as physical activity, team work, healthy competition, community support, travel and of course hockey! Our country needs more programs like this that provide an accessible sport to all."
Now in the planning stages for its fifteenth anniversary season in 2018, Play On! is the only national participatory event of its kind in the world, and the largest annual participatory sports event in Canadian history. Designed to capture the spirit of fun in sport, it provides access and opportunity for anyone to play street hockey in a highly organized and distinctively Canadian setting. The program has attracted an estimated 2.5M Canadians to the 170 events held to date, and holds the Guinness World Record as the largest street hockey event in the world. Play On! Canada’s interests are not limited to hockey. It is a not for profit organization with a mandate to “promote the importance of play by producing and supporting events that provide Canadians with positive introductory sport experiences.”
The Play On! street hockey program has been championed by the CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada since 2007. The national series is also sponsored by Booster Juice, VIA Rail, GoodLife Fitness, JVCKenwood, TimberMart, Driving Force, and Culligan Water. The official national charitable partners for Play On! in 2017 were the Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada and Canadian Blood Services.
