March 31, 2026. This past weekend, the streets of Taber were transformed into something truly special.
What began as a community response to adversity became a powerful celebration of sport, resilience, and togetherness, as Play On! Taber welcomed 43 street hockey teams from across Alberta—all united behind a single goal: rebuilding the town’s arena.
And the impact was immediate.
As of Sunday afternoon, the event had raised more than $143,000 (and counting) toward the reconstruction effort—an incredible milestone that speaks to the strength of the Taber community and the power of hockey to bring people together.
A Community Effort at Every Level
What made Play On! Taber truly unique was the level of leadership and participation from across the region.
This wasn’t just an event—it was a full community mobilization.
- Members of Taber Town Council were on site and actively engaged
- MD Council representatives stepped onto the pavement and into the action
- The local MP David Bexte and MLA Grant Hunter both participated, demonstrating strong support for the community and its future
From elected officials to volunteers, players to families, the message was clear:
This mattered. And everyone showed up.
Star Power Meets Small-Town Spirit
Adding to the excitement were nine special celebrity guests, including NHL alumni and elite athletes, who spent the weekend connecting with players, signing autographs, and even stepping into the games themselves.
For many young players, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience—sharing the street rink with athletes they’ve looked up to for years.
But what stood out most wasn’t just the celebrity presence—it was how seamlessly they became part of the community.
This was not a staged appearance.
This was real connection.
Real hockey.
Real moments.
43 Teams. One Purpose.
Teams came from across Alberta to take part in the tournament, bringing energy, competition, and community pride to every corner of the event footprint.
Across many rinks set up on the street in the heart of Taber, the sound of:
- sticks on pavement
- cheers from families, and
- laughter between games
created something unforgettable.
This wasn’t just about winning games.
It was about showing what hockey means to a community—and what a community can do when it comes together.
“We Should Cancel CornFest…”
Perhaps the most telling measure of the weekend’s success came from the people of Taber themselves.
Throughout the event, a common sentiment emerged:
“This is so incredible… we should consider cancelling CornFest and just doing this again.”
While said with a smile, the message behind it was real.
Play On! Taber didn’t just meet expectations—it exceeded them.
It created:
- a new sense of community pride
- a shared experience across generations
- and a powerful reminder of what’s possible
More Than a Tournament
Beyond the goals scored and games played, Play On! Taber delivered something much bigger:
- A meaningful contribution toward rebuilding critical community infrastructure
- A unifying moment following a difficult chapter for the town
- A blueprint for how street sports can drive real impact
This is what Play On! is all about.
